Dr. Carolina Chianelli

Dr. Carolina Chianelli is an associate professor of Biology at El Paso Community College (EPCC). This current award to expand undergraduate education in computational genomics using cloud computing, will build on EPCC’s longstanding record of advancing student access to high-impact research experiences. Since 2012, Dr. Chianelli has contributed to federally funded initiatives—including programs supported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and National Institutes of Health—that engage students in authentic research. Her work has included mentoring early college and undergraduate students, implementing Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), and integrating cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing and Oxford Nanopore sequencing into the classroom. A recipient of the ASM-LINK UFRI Fellowship, Dr. Chianelli is also an active contributor to national genomics education initiatives such as the Genomics Education Modules Program (GEMs). This award will further support her efforts to prepare a diverse, workforce-ready generation of students equipped with essential skills in computational genomics and data science.
