| SUMMARY |
| Texas Undergraduate Medical Academy (UMA) The UMA represents a legislative supported effort to address the need for increasing qualified applicants to medical school primarily. The effort (2004-present) has been expanded to include dentists, veterinarians and pharmacists. Each o f these healthcare provider groups has a need t o increase their respective populations due t o a growing patient population and an aging workforce. A new model for pre-professional preparation has been developed for UMA students that includes a prescribed sequence of science courses, study skill enhancement, research skill development, intrusive academic advising and professional exam preparation. This model has contributed to a 95% graduation rate among UMA students and above state and national admission averages. Co-author of Bachelor degree i n Public Health The degree i s the first o f its kind among Universities of similar make-up i n the State of Texas. The degree addresses the need for a formally educated workforce to respond t o the chronic, mental and infectious diseases that impact the human population. The degree also provides entry level education for students who will acquire the foundation useful for the continuation of their education at an advanced graduate study level. The curriculum also provides course study that complements academic disciplines such as Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering and Animal Science. College Preparatory Summer Program for STEM majors The development of this program is designed to evaluate high school student progress and retention in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus and English grammar. It is intended t o help encourage students to succeed in the respective areas in order to be better prepared for University study. The initiative also identifies high school courses needed t o enhance success in entry level math and English courses that promote retention and graduation from the University without the use of remedial courses. Further, the summer experience identifies the requirements for study in professional school and provides exposure t o professional school via visits and presentations. |
